Suwon Hwaseong: Archery, Balloon & Night Fortress

Try traditional Korean archery (guksul) inside the UNESCO-listed Hwaseong Fortress at Yeonmudae, the fortress's eastern command post. Instructors guide you through proper stance and technique — no experience needed. Arrows fly toward targets against a backdrop of ancient stone walls.

Suwon is the birthplace of wang galbi — enormous grilled short ribs marinated in a sweet-savory soy sauce, served with ssamjang, pickled garlic, and fresh greens. The area around Suwon Station has generations-old restaurants that have perfected this dish since the 1940s.

A tethered hot air balloon that rises 150 metres above Suwon for a bird's-eye view of Hwaseong Fortress's full perimeter tracing the hilltops — the only way to truly grasp the fortress's UNESCO-recognised scale. On clear days you can see all the way to Seoul. Flights run day and evening.

Walk a scenic section of the 5.7 km Hwaseong Fortress wall from the eastern Changnyongmun Gate toward Paldalmun in the south. The ramparts pass watchtowers, artillery bastions, and hidden command posts — all UNESCO-listed and remarkably intact. Evening walks when the wall is softly lit are magical.

The bustling traditional market radiating out from Paldalmun Gate comes alive in the evening with vendors selling tteokbokki, pajeon, bindaetteok, and sundae. It's been operating since the Joseon era and remains one of Gyeonggi Province's most authentic market experiences.

As darkness falls, the 5.7 km fortress wall is illuminated in warm golden light — completely transforming its atmosphere. Walk the ramparts after dinner when crowds thin out, with the city lights below and lit watchtowers glowing against the night sky. A romantic and largely undiscovered end to any Suwon day.
