Yeosu: Harbor Romance & Art Island Escape

Night harbor vibes on Day 1, tidal art island and the Turtle Ship admiral on Day 2

Two days that show every side of Yeosu — Korea's most romantic southern coastal city. Day 1 follows the signature harbour route through camellia islands, sea cable cars, mural villages, and the glow of Nangmanpocha at midnight. Day 2 takes a slower pace: walk the tidal path to a private art island, visit Admiral Yi's Turtle Ship, and optionally end at Hyangiram Hermitage's breathtaking clifftop sea panorama.

Day 1 Highlights

  • Odongdo Island — camellia forest and sea-cliff paths
  • Yeosu Ocean Cable Car — crystal cabin over the sea
  • Gosodong Mural Village & ocean-view cafés
  • Nangmanpocha Street — dolmuneo samhap and night harbour glow

Day 2 Highlights

  • Jangdo Island of Art — tidal causeway, contemporary sculpture garden by the sea
  • Isunsin Square & Turtle Ship — world's first iron-clad warship, life-size replica
  • Hyangiram Hermitage (optional) — rock-crack passage and south-sea panorama from the cliff
1

Odongdo Island

⏱ 1.5h

A beautiful island connected to the city by a 768-metre breakwater walk (or the Dongbaek Yeolbancharo mini-train). Inside, trails wind through Korea's densest camellia forest, a bamboo tunnel, sea-cave viewpoints (Yonggul), and dramatic cliff paths. At its most spectacular during camellia season (late January–March) when the trees blaze red.

2

Gejang Baekban Lunch

⏱ 1.0h

Yeosu's signature "rice thief" meal — raw crab marinated in soy sauce (ganjang gejang) or spicy sauce (yangnyeom gejang), served with a spread of Jeolla-style banchan including got-kimchi (sharp mustard-leaf kimchi). For the crab-averse, braised hairtail (gachi-jorim) is equally iconic. A proper introduction to southern Korean cuisine.

3

Yeosu Ocean Cable Car

⏱ 1.5h

One of Asia's most thrilling cable car rides — 1.5 km over the sea between Jasangong Park and Dolsangong Park. The crystal-floor cabin lets you watch the ocean pass beneath your feet while Dolsan Bridge, Odongdo, and the full harbour panorama unfold. Sunset timing makes this spectacular.

4

Gosodong Mural Village & Ocean-View Cafés

⏱ 1.5h

Yeosu's oldest neighbourhood climbs a hillside above the harbour, its narrow alleys painted with whimsical murals. Looking down between the houses you see Dolsan Bridge and the island beyond. At the hilltop, full-glass-front cafés serve excellent coffee with sweeping sea views — perfect for the golden-hour shot before the evening programme.

5

Nangmanpocha Street (Night)

⏱ 2.0h

Rows of glowing tent bars along the harbour below Dolsan Bridge, where the water reflects the bridge lights in shimmering gold. The must-order is dolmuneo samhap — grilled octopus with samgyeopsal, abalone, and got-kimchi — paired with cold soju. Korea's most romantic street dining experience.

1

Jangdo Island of Art

⏱ 2.0h

A mysterious tidal island in Yeosu's Ungcheon district that can only be reached on foot twice a day when the sea recedes — revealing a stone causeway (nodu-gil) across the water. The island itself is an eco-art sanctuary: contemporary sculpture gardens, gallery pavilions, and manicured green paths in total tranquility. Check tide times before visiting — the causeway floods at high tide.

2

Street Snacks near Isunsin Square

⏱ 1.0h

The streets around Isunsin Square are packed with Yeosu's trendiest food stalls — bada-gimbap (seaweed rolls with tuna and got-kimchi), geobukseon-ppang (turtle ship-shaped bread filled with red bean or custard), and strawberry mochi. A perfect light lunch while exploring the historic square area before the museum.

3

Isunsin Square & Turtle Ship

⏱ 1.5h

Stand before the statue of Admiral Yi Sun-sin — Korea's greatest naval hero — and board a life-size replica of the geobukseon (Turtle Ship), the world's first iron-clad warship, which helped repel the Japanese invasion in 1592. The interior walkthrough explains the ship's revolutionary design: cannon ports, spiked roof, and dragon figurehead. A fascinating piece of military history foreign visitors rarely expect to find this impressive.

4

Hyangiram Hermitage (Optional)

⏱ 1.5h

One of Korea's four sacred Avalokitesvara prayer sites, perched on the southern tip of Yeosu on rocks above the open sea. The approach is extraordinary — you squeeze through narrow fissures in the granite boulders (haetalmun, Liberation Gates) before emerging to a panoramic sweep of the South Sea horizon. Sunrise visits are legendary. Note: 40 minutes from central Yeosu by car.
