Jeonju Deep Dive: Tradition, Retro & Local Nightlife
Hanok village day 1, then lotus lake, a retro theme park & makgeolli alleys on day 2
Day one immerses you in Jeonju's traditional glory β hanbok, bibimbap and the city's best night market. Day two reveals the other side of Jeonju: a park filled with summer lotus flowers, a sprawling 1970sβ80s retro theme park where you can play vintage arcade games, and an evening pub crawl through the city's legendary makgeolli alleys where endless snacks appear with every refill.
Jeondong Cathedral & Gyeonggijeon Shrine
β± 1.5hStart at Jeondong Cathedral β Honam's oldest Romanesque church β then cross to Gyeonggijeon, the royal shrine housing the portrait of Joseon's founder. The deep bamboo forest path inside is Jeonju's most beloved photo spot, especially in hanbok.
Jeonju Bibimbap (Lunch)
β± 1.0hThe original Jeonju bibimbap β served with over 30 seasonal vegetable toppings, far more elaborate than bibimbap elsewhere. Have it at a traditional restaurant near Gyeonggijeon, or opt for seokgalbi (grilled bone-in short rib) for something heartier.
Omokdae Viewpoint & Hanok Village Stroll
β± 1.5hA gentle 5β10 min climb to Omokdae for the iconic panorama of grey-tiled rooftops stretching below. Then descend into the alleyways for street snacks and a hanok terrace cafΓ© break.
Nambu Market Youth Hall & Night Market
β± 2.0hThe Youth Hall on the 2nd floor of Nambu traditional market is a creative space run by young vendors. On Friday and Saturday evenings, the outdoor night market fills with global street food stalls and live music β one of Jeonju's best nights out for foreign visitors.
Deokjin Park (Morning Walk)
β± 1.0hA beloved city park built around a large lake, with a charming hanok-style library sitting over the water. In summer (JulyβAugust) the lake erupts in lotus blossoms β an extraordinary sight that showcases the beauty of traditional Korean garden aesthetics.
Hyundae-ok Kongnamul Gukbap (Lunch)
β± 1.0hJeonju's other cult food: kongnamul gukbap β a clean, deeply savoury bean-sprout rice soup served in the traditional toryeom style (broth ladled repeatedly over the rice until perfectly absorbed). A bowl of pure local comfort.
Jeonju Nanjang Retro Theme Park
β± 1.5hA huge retro theme park that meticulously recreates a Korean neighbourhood from the 1970sβ80s: old shops, a schoolroom, an arcade, vintage comic books β everything you can touch and interact with. Foreign visitors find it genuinely fascinating as a window into Korea's rapid modernisation era.
Jaman Mural Village
β± 1.0hA hillside neighbourhood of narrow alleyways decorated with cheerful murals and quirky independent cafΓ©s, just over the ridge from Omokdae. A relaxed, photogenic wander with great views back over the hanok rooftops.
Makgeolli Alley & Gamaek Bar Crawl (Evening)
β± 2.0hExperience Jeonju's legendary drinking culture: at makgeolli alleys, every jug of cloudy rice wine ordered triggers an endless parade of free snack plates. Then try gamaek β drinking cheap draft beer at plastic tables set up outside neighbourhood convenience stores, paired with dried filefish and squid. Uniquely Korean, utterly local.
